Erzurum Technical University (ETU) organised a conference entitled ‘The Significance of the
Gallipoli Victory’ to mark 18 March Martyrs’ Memorial Day and the 111th anniversary of the
Gallipoli Naval Victory.
The event, held in the Prof. Dr. Muammer Yaylalı Conference Hall, was attended by ETU
Rector Prof. Dr. Bulent Çakmak, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof. Dr. Uğur Akbulut,
academics and students.
Speaking at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şemsettin Çelik, a lecturer in the Department of
History at ETu’s Faculty of Arts, highlighted the significance of the Gallipoli Victory in the
context of both Turkish and world history. Çelik emphasised that Gallipoli was not merely a
military success, but also a symbol of the nation’s unity and solidarity, as well as of love for
the homeland.
Explaining that the struggle at Gallipoli was won with great faith and determination despite
the hardships of the era, Çelik noted that this victory laid the groundwork for the
establishment of the Republic of Türkiye.
